S 400 is the Russian premium air defense system designed by Almaz central design bureau. It is considered to be an upgraded version of the S 300 air defense system. The S 400 system entered service in April 2007 and the first S-400 was deployed in combat in August 2007.S 400 air defense system is an all-weather air defense system designed to engage all types of aerial targets including aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and ballistic and cruise missiles within the range of 400 km, at an altitude of up to 30 km
An S 400 system is one of its kind which provides multi-layered air defense. The S 400 is a system integrated with multi function radar, command and control system, autonomous detection and targeting systems and launchers.
The S 400 system consists of a command and control center system 55K6E based on the Ural-532301. The integral part of S 400 is the panoramic radar detection system (91N6E) with a range of 600 km. The S-band radar can track up to 300 targets. This will enable Indian forces to scan airspace deep inside enemy territory for aerial threat. It also has anti-jamming property, enabling the system to operate under heavy ECM condition. The 92N6E (or 92N2E) is a multi-functional radar with a 400-kilometer (250 mi) range which can track 100 targets.S 400 system has dedicated anti-stealth radar system (Protivnik-GE). It operates at the ultra-high frequency with a range of 400 km. This radar system will help India in detecting J 20 or J 31 from long ranges
Protivinik –GE and 92H6E radar integrated with other subsystem and sensors will give India 360 degree coverage and greater ability to detect stealth aircraft. Any attempt to jam the S 400 will be problematic as these radars have passive angle track capability against jammers.
The S 400 system comprising up to 8 divisions (battalions) can control up to 72 launchers, with a maximum of 384 missiles. (Including missiles with a range of less than 400 km).India is all set to induct 5 system of S 400. But it is unknown whether how many division of S 400 will be inducted. Being a member of MTCR. India will pursue 6000 missiles (40N6) & (48N6E3) with a range of 400 km and 250 km respectively. This missile system will enable India to target AWACS and Air refueling aircraft along with other highly maneuvering aerial threat deep inside western and eastern borders
India is the top importer of weapons in the world is trying to develop its own multi-layered air defense system. In future, S 400 will be integrated with MR-SAM, Akash mk1,mk1s & mk2, QR-SAM. This will bring India on par to China when it comes to integrated multi-layered air defense system. The recent test of SFDR is an important test in the development of XR-SAM. This system which is under-development is speculated to have a range of 250km.
The induction of five S 400 air defense systems will make India regain its dominance in eastern and western borders.
